Additional reading
As well as the seven main books, there are also several other books related to the Harry Potter series. These include:
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2001)
- Quidditch Through the Ages (2001)
- The Tales of Beedle the Bard (2008)
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages are companion books that provide additional information about the wizarding world. They were written in aid of the BBC charity Comic Relief and are two text books that are mentioned in the main Harry Potter series.
The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a collection of fairy tales that are mentioned in the final Harry Potter book. The book was written following the publication of the final book in the main series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and initially only seven copies existed. Rowling gifted six of these copies to people closely linked to the book series and one handwritten copy was sold at auction to raise money for her charity The Children’s Voice (ultimately selling for £1.95m). The book was later made available to the public.
There is also the 2016 play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The play was written by Jack Throne but based on a story written by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Thorne. The play is set 19 years on from the last novel and follows Harry Potter in his job as Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, and his son, Albus Severus Potter, who is about to attend his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This script was also released as a book in the same year and Rowling herself describes it as the 8th Harry Potter book.
